The State Highways and Minor Ports Department has successfully resolved the land acquisition issues that had previously delayed the construction of the 1.3-km flyover from Tamukkam to Nelpettai, commonly known as the Goripalayam Bridge. Officials have confirmed that the project will be completed before January 2026.
The Rs 190.40 crore project, which features a 12-meter wide flyover, was granted technical sanction on April 30, 2023, and was officially inaugurated by Chief Minister MK Stalin in October 2023. The flyover is being built in three phases: from Tamukkam Ground to Thevar Statue, a parallel structure alongside the existing AV Bridge up to the Anna Statue in Nelpettai, and from Thevar Statue to Sellur. In total, the flyover will consist of 61 piers and 62 spans.
According to Highways Department officials, delays in land acquisition for the Tamukkam–Goripalayam stretch have now been resolved, and construction is proceeding smoothly. "We plan to complete the section parallel to the AV Bridge by November," said a department official. The Sellur segment is expected to be finished by December and will function as a one-way road. The project also includes the construction of service roads and a vehicular underpass at the Bibikulam–Gandhi Museum Road junction.
