In a significant step to deepen India–UK educational ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer have announced that nine British universities will establish campuses across India.
Leading the initiative, the University of Southampton has already launched its Gurugram campus and welcomed its first cohort of students. Other universities—including Liverpool, York, Aberdeen, Bristol, and Surrey—plan to set up campuses in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Gujarat’s GIFT City. The University of Bristol’s enterprise-focused campus in Mumbai is set to open in 2026, while the University of Surrey will emphasize programs in artificial intelligence, finance, and cybersecurity.
This initiative aligns with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and is designed to offer world-class education to Indian students domestically, strengthen UK–India research collaboration, and promote academia-industry partnerships for innovation and skill development. The announcement was made at the CEO Summit held in Mumbai.
Additionally, both countries unveiled a partnership on critical minerals, including the creation of an Industry Guild and a Supply Chain Observatory, supported by a satellite campus at ISM Dhanbad.
