NINL's Remarkable Turnaround: A Tata Steel Success Story

Nearly three years after acquiring Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd. (NINL), Tata Steel has successfully revitalized the former public sector enterprise.

Acquired in 2022 as part of Tata Steel’s strategy to grow its long products segment in India, NINL was previously plagued by inefficiencies and low capacity utilization. Since the takeover, the plant has undergone a significant turnaround, now operating at a capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Plans are underway to expand this to 5.5 MTPA in Phase I—a 450% increase.

Phase II aims to further boost capacity to 9.5 MTPA, with proposals expected to go before the Tata Steel board later this year.

During a recent investor call, Managing Director and CEO T.V. Narendran noted that public hearings for the expansion are complete and environmental clearance applications have been submitted. He also highlighted a shift in strategy: obtaining regulatory approvals in advance to accelerate execution once the board gives the green light.
