Odisha's ₹382 Crore Water Lifeline for Sambalpur

The Odisha Cabinet has approved a ₹382.4 crore mega drinking water project for the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC), aimed at ensuring round-the-clock supply of safe drinking water to residents of Sambalpur, Burla, and Hirakud.

The project, to be implemented by Maharashtra-based Eagle Infra India, is scheduled to commence on September 1, 2025, and conclude by August 31, 2027. It has been designed with future population growth in mind, anticipating Sambalpur’s population to increase from the current 4.75 lakh to 7 lakh by 2043.

To be executed on an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) basis, the initiative also includes five years of operation and maintenance post-completion.

Key components of the project include:

A 110 million litres per day (MLD) intake well in the Sambalpur distributary of the Hirakud Dam.

A 65 MLD water treatment plant at Tipupada to serve Sambalpur and Hirakud.

A 35 MLD treatment plant for Burla.

In addition, the project features wastewater recycling and sludge treatment facilities, promoting sustainable and efficient water management across the region.
