The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a series of proposals to expand the city’s metro network into peripheral areas, with the aim of improving mass transit connectivity beyond the urban core.
At its general body meeting, corporators cleared a new metro corridor from Khadakwasla to Donaje, which is expected to enhance access to Sinhagad Fort and nearby regions. Another major proposal includes a metro line from Katraj to Khed Shivapur, designed to connect with the planned outer ring road and support future suburban growth.
The civic body also approved additional extensions such as the Katraj–Undri corridor and the Wagholi–Lonikand route, targeting improved connectivity for rapidly developing residential and industrial zones on the outskirts.
All proposals will now be forwarded to Maha Metro for the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs), which will assess feasibility, route alignment, and cost estimates.
Corporators emphasised that expanding the metro network is essential to meet growing urban mobility demands. With two metro lines already operational in central Pune, they stressed the importance of linking the city centre with emerging growth corridors.
PMC Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale said the civic body is committed to supporting swift implementation. He noted that joint meetings with Metro officials and district authorities are being held to accelerate progress.
A Maha Metro official added that Phase II expansion already includes key corridors such as Khadakwasla–Hadapsar–Kharadi and Nal Stop–Warje. Additional proposals from PMC and PCMC will be taken up in phases for further study.
