The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced a ₹826.62 crore initiative to rejuvenate the Indrayani and Pavana rivers, with the goal of making them pollution-free.
Jointly funded by the Central and Maharashtra governments, the project aims to prevent untreated sewage, solid waste, and pollution from religious activities from entering the rivers. Of the total budget, ₹674.13 crore has been allocated for the Indrayani river and ₹152.49 crore for the Pavana river.
The Indrayani project will include the construction of new sewage treatment plants, the upgrading of existing facilities, and the implementation of solid waste management systems, with technical guidance from IIT Roorkee. Additional measures such as iron mesh barriers and biogas plants are also planned.
The Pavana river project will cover 54 villages and involve the establishment of 14 sewage treatment plants along with comprehensive solid waste management solutions. The PMRDA aims to preserve the ecological and cultural significance of both rivers. According to the PMRDA Commissioner, the central government will provide 60% of the funding, while the state government will contribute 40%.
