Poonamallee to Parandur by Metro: 19 stations, 10,712 crore dream

Chennai Metro Rail has successfully concluded a comprehensive study, presenting a proposal to the state government for the development of an expansive mass rapid transit system connecting Poonamallee to Parandur via Thirumazhisai and Sriperumbudur. Encompassing a total corridor length of 43.63 km and featuring 19 strategically located stations, this transformative project is projected to incur an estimated cost of Rs 10,712 crore.

The ongoing Phase-II initiative by Chennai Metro Rail is progressing towards completion, with an imminent station at Poonamallee set to be operational within the next two years. Positioned as an integral component of Corridor-4 within Phase-II, this station currently establishes a link between Poonamallee and Light House. In a significant expansion, this corridor is slated to extend seamlessly from Poonamallee to Parandur, constituting a fully elevated stretch.

Complementing this ambitious undertaking, the other segments of Phase-II comprise Madhavaram to SIPCOT (Corridor-3) and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (Corridor-5). Noteworthy stations along this newly envisioned route include Nazarathpet, Chembarambakkam, Thirumazhisai, Chettipedu, Pennalur, Sriperumbudur, SIPCOT, Neervalur, and Parandur airport.

The introduction of a mass rapid transit connection to the second airport holds significant importance, given the heavy usage of the Chennai airport Metro Rail station by a considerable number of air travelers. In light of this, the forward-looking strategy involves planning and implementing connectivity measures for the upcoming airport, ensuring a seamless and efficient transport network for the future.
