Power Play: Haryana's ₹12,000 Crore Energy Mega-Push

The Haryana government has announced plans to establish two 800 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power units in Hisar and Panipat, aimed at meeting the state's growing electricity demand. The announcement was made by State Energy Minister Anil Vij following a high-level meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Proposed by the Haryana Power Generation Corporation Ltd (HPGCL), the projects are expected to involve an investment of approximately ₹12,000 crore. These next-generation, high-efficiency thermal plants are intended to significantly boost power availability across Haryana, supporting increasing consumption from households, industries, and commercial users.

To fast-track implementation, officials have been directed to facilitate coal linkages and other logistical clearances. The projects are part of a broader strategy to enhance energy security and infrastructure in the state.

The meeting also reviewed the statewide rollout of smart meters and addressed the growing strain on the grid due to rising peak power demand. In line with this, Haryana has requested the expansion of its battery energy storage system (BESS) allocation from 500 MW to 1,500 MW to improve grid stability and backup capacity.
