Power play: Jharkhand, CCL in talks for mega thermal project

Coal India's subsidiary, Central Coalfields (CCL), is exploring the possibility of entering into a joint venture (JV) with the Jharkhand government for the second phase expansion of the Tenughat Thermal Power Station (TTPS) in the state.

Tenughat Vidyut Nigam (TVNL) aims to initiate the extension project (Stage II) at TTPS, situated in Lalpania, Bokaro district, Jharkhand, by establishing 2X660 MW coal-fired supercritical units. CCL is keen on being a JV partner, with the state government contributing land, and CCL ensuring a steady coal supply.

Discussions on this proposal took place between CCL officials and the Jharkhand government last week. To formalize the partnership, two committees will be formed to address various aspects, including determining the percentage of involvement from both parties in the JV.

In the current financial year, the company aims to achieve a production target of 84 million tonnes. In the previous fiscal year, CCL successfully produced 76.09 million tonnes of coal.

The existing thermal station boasts a total installed capacity of 420 MW, featuring two units with a capacity of 210 MW each. The first unit commenced commercial operation in September 1996, followed by the second unit in September 1997.
