The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) under the Ministry of Environment has advanced the proposal for the run-of-the-river Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project (SUHEP) located in Arunachal Pradesh. Progression of the project remains strictly conditional upon the acquisition of Stage-1 forest clearance, necessitated by the planned diversion of 2,733 hectares of forest land and the clearing of over 1.35 million [Note: 1.35 lakh / 135,733] trees. Although the committee highlighted concerns regarding deforestation-induced habitat fragmentation and biodiversity loss, it greenlit the initiative subject to rigorous mitigation protocols and statutory compliance to align renewable energy generation with ecological stewardship.
