Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) will supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the first-ever gas-based power plant in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, to be developed by NTPC, India’s largest power producer. This project marks a major step toward transitioning the island territory from diesel-based power generation to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
“IOCL is working closely with stakeholders to develop the necessary LNG infrastructure for NTPC’s upcoming power plants in South Andaman and Great Nicobar,” a company official said. “With an established presence in the region, IOCL is well equipped to support this clean energy initiative.”
The 50 MW power plant, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in December 2018, is targeted for commissioning by 2027–28, subject to ongoing land acquisition.
The new facility will significantly reduce diesel usage for electricity generation on the islands, supporting national clean energy goals. IOCL will continue to supply high-speed diesel (HSD) during the transition period. The company also confirmed that it has secured adequate LNG supply through long-term international agreements to meet the project’s needs.
