Powering Telangana: A ₹1500 Crore Biogas Push

The Telangana government has attracted a significant investment of ₹1,500 crore in the compressed biogas (CBG) sector, driven by a strategic alliance between South Africa-based Biovest Holdings and Hyderabad-based firms Spantech Engineers (India) and EcoMax Energy (India). In the initial phase, the collaboration aims to establish 20 CBG plants across multiple districts in Telangana.

A core component of the partnership is a bilateral technology transfer agreement. Under this arrangement, Spantech will supply its proprietary BioGenie biogas purification systems to Biovest. In exchange, Biovest will license its advanced Herba modular anaerobic digestion technology to Spantech for local manufacturing in Hyderabad. Notably, Herba is recognized for delivering biomethane yields up to three times higher than conventional systems.

EcoMax Energy has been designated as the exclusive deployment partner for this technology in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The company will lead project implementation, attract further investment, and drive job creation across the region. As part of its long-term vision, EcoMax plans to install one Herba-based CBG plant in every district.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) formalizing the partnership between EcoMax and Spantech was signed in the presence of Telangana state ministers and senior officials.

EcoMax Energy CEO and Managing Director, M Rithvik Rao, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating: “We are actively raising capital from European green funds and development banks to finance this initiative. Our goal is to position Telangana as a green energy leader—achieving self-reliance in compressed natural gas, generating thousands of green jobs, and supporting local agricultural communities.”
