Powering the East: Tinsukia and Dibrugarh Enter the Electric Era

Indian Railways has successfully completed the electrification of the Tinsukia–Dibrugarh and Makum–Ledo rail sections in Upper Assam, marking a significant milestone in strengthening rail infrastructure in the region.

The electrification enables the deployment of electric locomotives, reducing dependence on diesel traction and resulting in cleaner, faster, and more energy-efficient train operations. The Tinsukia–Dibrugarh section plays a vital role in passenger and freight movement, while the Makum–Ledo line is strategically important for coal transportation. Railway authorities noted that the development aligns with Indian Railways’ objective of achieving 100% network electrification and progressing towards net-zero carbon emissions.

The initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency, lower fuel costs, and improve service reliability. It will also support local industries, including tea gardens and other businesses, by facilitating quicker and more reliable freight movement. With successful trial runs of electric locomotives already completed, full-scale commercial operations are expected to commence shortly.
