Powering Tomorrow: India's 24 GW Storage Push

India is rapidly expanding its Pumped Storage Project (PSP) footprint, with approximately 24 GW of capacity currently under construction, appraisal, or CEA examination. Central Electricity Authority (CEA) data highlights that 11 projects (15,870 MW) are actively under construction, six projects (8,140 MW) have secured CEA concurrence or await construction, and a 640 MW project is under active review.

Essential for integrating variable renewable energy and maintaining grid reliability, PSPs store excess power for peak demand periods. To support this, the CEA has outlined a strategic roadmap targeting 100 GW of PSP capacity by 2035–36. Alongside PSP expansion, the government is driving Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) adoption via Viability Gap Funding (VGF), creating a robust energy storage framework for the nation’s growing clean energy infrastructure.
