Powering Up: ADB Backs India’s Solar Push with $850 Million

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced an $850 million financing package to accelerate India’s flagship rooftop solar initiative, the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Approved under Subprogram 2 of the Accelerating Affordable and Inclusive Rooftop Solar Systems Development Program, the funding builds on initial efforts launched in November 2025.

The program targets adding 30 GW of residential solar capacity by FY27 and bringing solar energy to 10 million low- and middle-income households. By lowering upfront costs for 3.5 million families, expanding access to finance, and modernizing grid infrastructure, the initiative drives India's transition to clean energy. Additionally, it focuses on bolstering domestic manufacturing, battery storage, and recycling, while certifying 6,000 workers and cutting carbon emissions by 28.8 million tonnes. ADB Country Director Mio Oka emphasized that the funding will make clean energy significantly more accessible and affordable nationwide.
