Powering Up the Hub: Bengaluru’s Tech Corridor Gets a 400kV Boost

The State Board for Wildlife (SBWL) has approved a key upgrade to Bengaluru’s 400kV power transmission network, clearing the way for a more reliable and high-quality power supply to the city’s rapidly expanding technology corridor in the eastern region.

The long-pending project involves replacing the nearly four-decade-old transmission line that connects Somanahalli on Kanakapura Road with Mylasandra in Electronics City. This line serves as a critical power corridor not only for eastern Bengaluru but also for areas such as Hoodi, Narasapura, Kolar, and parts of Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh. The upgrade includes the construction of 24 new towers and the stringing of nearly 10 km of transmission lines. As portions of the alignment pass through Bannerghatta National Park, the project required clearance from the wildlife board.

Once completed, the upgrade is expected to significantly strengthen Bengaluru’s power infrastructure, reduce the risk of outages, and support the growing demand from technology parks and residential developments.

A senior engineer from the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) said the existing line feeds the 400kV Mylasandra substation, which transmits between 1,500 MW and 2,000 MW of power daily. “With the sharp increase in load, the substation began facing low-voltage issues, making it challenging to maintain quality power supply,” the official said.
