Pune’s Yerawada–Katraj underground tunnel project has progressed as its pre-feasibility report receives a positive response from the Chief Minister’s office.
The project, designed to tackle Pune’s traffic congestion, proposes an underground corridor connecting the city’s eastern and southern regions. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the urgency, noting that surface road expansion has reached its limits. The tunnel forms part of a larger plan to develop a 54-km underground road network aimed at improving north-south connectivity in the city, which experiences heavy vehicular traffic.
Once completed, the tunnel is expected to reduce travel time, ease congestion, and divert traffic underground, enhancing Pune’s overall transport efficiency. The estimated cost of the underground network is around Rs 32,000 crore, linking key areas such as Sinhagad Road, Kothrud, and Khadki with the inner ring road.
