Jindal Steel has announced plans to double its structural steel production capacity at its Raigarh facility in Chhattisgarh, expanding output from 1.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 2.4 MTPA by mid-2028.
The expansion is aimed at meeting rising domestic demand for heavy and ultra-heavy structural steel sections used in large infrastructure, energy and industrial projects. According to the company, the additional capacity will also help reduce India’s reliance on imported structural steel.
The project involves setting up a new steel mill at Raigarh along with upgrades to existing processing facilities. Currently, Jindal Steel produces parallel-flange structural sections ranging from 100 mm to 900 mm in depth, with sectional weights of up to 333 kg per metre.
Following the expansion, the company plans to manufacture sections up to 1,100 mm in depth with weights of up to 1,500 kg per metre, among the largest structural steel sections produced in India. These heavy sections are critical for major projects such as bridges, refineries and power plants.
