Reddy Ramps Up: Telangana Fast-Tracks Key Irrigation Projects

Telangana Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has announced that the State is fast-tracking the completion of pending irrigation projects, emphasising strict deadlines, accountability, and transparency in execution.

Among the top priorities are:

The Tummidihatti segment of the Pranahita–Chevella project, The Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel

Restoration of Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages under the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS)

A final decision on the Tummidihatti canal alignment is expected by 22 October, following comparative evaluations of technical feasibility and cost. The SLBC tunnel is targeted for completion by December 2027, with work set to begin post-monsoon.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is expected to play a key role in technical planning for the restoration of damaged KLIS barrages, alongside the Chief Design Organisation. Additionally, helicopter-borne magnetic surveys by the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI)—currently awaiting DGCA clearance—will help map subsurface rock profiles for structural assessments.

The State has also requested Central Water Commission (CWC) clearance and investment approval for major projects like Sammakka-Sarakka and Seethamma Sagar under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) framework.
