Rohtak Road: The ₹114 Crore Shield Against Waterlogging

The storm water drain project along Rohtak Road is nearing completion and is expected to provide significant relief to thousands of residents affected by monsoon waterlogging, Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma said on Sunday.

During a site inspection, Verma expressed satisfaction with the progress, stating that the upgraded drainage system will benefit Kirari and nearby areas in West Delhi. He also reviewed ongoing irrigation and flood control works aimed at addressing persistent waterlogging issues across the region.

The project involves constructing storm water drains from the Kirari Suleman Drain near Nangloi Metro Station to the Hiran Kudna Drain, covering key stretches between Metro Pillar Nos. 428 to 626 and from Tikri Border to Hiran Kudna Drain on both sides of the road. The total cost of the project is around ₹113.98 crore.

Officials said the RCC drains, ranging from 1.2 metres to 2.25 metres in width, are designed to handle heavy storm water flow during peak monsoon periods. So far, approximately 16,000 metres of the drain have been completed, while 2,200 metres remain under construction. The project, which began in February 2025, is progressing steadily.

Highlighting the importance of the project, Verma said waterlogging has long been a major concern for residents of areas such as Mundka, Rajdhani Park, and surrounding localities. He noted that the initiative aims to provide a systematic and long-term solution to the problem.

Once completed, the drainage system will enable smooth flow of rainwater from the Nangloi region into the Kirari Suleman Drain and onward to the Hiran Kudna Drain, ensuring faster water disposal.

In addition, a ₹23.51 crore Irrigation and Flood Control project has already been completed to divert excess water from the Kirari Suleman Drain into a supplementary channel, further improving drainage efficiency during heavy rainfall.

Verma reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening Delhi’s drainage infrastructure to better prepare for the monsoon season.
