The Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned ₹1,187 crore for major water supply and sewerage infrastructure projects under the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC), targeting 18 wards in the Old City as well as newly integrated areas including Ramnagar and Sujabad.
Varanasi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari described the approval as a major milestone following sustained efforts to enhance civic infrastructure and basic amenities in the region. The largest component, a ₹292 crore project, will focus on laying new water supply pipelines, sewer networks, and providing household connections.
In Sujabad Domari, a dedicated ₹37 crore project will install drinking water pipelines to improve access to clean water. Additionally, proposals worth ₹858.63 crore will upgrade water and sewer lines across several wards, including Shivala, Nagwa, Bagahada, and others.
Once completed, these projects are expected to benefit more than seven lakh residents, significantly improving the city’s sanitation and water supply systems, and contributing to Varanasi’s broader urban transformation.
