The Government of Andhra Pradesh has approved ₹369.20 crore for the modernisation of the Guntur channel, clearing a long-pending irrigation upgrade for the region.
The proposal, initiated by Union Minister of State for Rural Development Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, was sanctioned through GO Rt. No. 217 on May 4, 2026. The order was issued by Chief Secretary G Sai Prasad, who also oversees the Water Resources Department.
The project is expected to stabilise irrigation across more than 33,000 acres in 33 villages, benefiting over four lakh people. It will cover the main canal and distributaries from 0 to 47 km within the Krishna delta system. Farmers have welcomed the move, noting that improved water availability will support both agriculture and drinking water needs.
In parallel, the Guntur Municipal Corporation is accelerating desilting work across 180 km of drainage channels to strengthen urban water management. The irrigation upgrade follows an earlier approval of ₹363.23 crore under AMRUT 2.0 for enhancing drinking water infrastructure in Guntur city.
