₹414-Crore Kuthambakkam Bus Terminal: Ready to Roll

The long-delayed ₹414-crore Kuthambakkam Mofussil Bus Terminal near Thiruvallur is nearing completion and is expected to become operational in the coming months.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is in the final stages of selecting a private concessionaire to operate the terminal under a 15-year public-private partnership (PPP) model. Spanning 24.8 acres, the terminal is designed as a major hub for west-bound TNSTC and MTC buses. It will feature 136 bus bays, 64 idle bays, 44 commercial shops, dormitories, public amenities, and an additional 9-acre area for idle parking and a police station.

Connectivity will be enhanced by a new 36-metre-wide, 2.2-km access road from NH-4, bringing the total project footprint to 52 acres. The chosen concessionaire must establish a special purpose vehicle (SPV) under the Companies Act before signing the agreement. A mandatory 15-day trial run will precede the official launch.

The concessionaire will oversee all terminal operations and may subcontract services such as security and parking, but remains fully responsible for service quality. Revenue opportunities include advertising, rentals, and parking fees.
