On 19 November 2025, Public Works Minister E.V. Velu and Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar laid the foundation stone for a new anicut across the Thenpennai River in Kallakurichi.
The ₹75-crore project, implemented by the Water Resources Department (WRD), is designed to irrigate 4,130 acres of agricultural land. The anicut, spanning 240 metres, will harness 5.83 million cubic feet of water and is expected to enhance groundwater levels, benefiting 124 borewells in the surrounding areas. The project was originally announced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during the 2025–26 Assembly session, and construction has now commenced.
The new structure will enable effective utilisation of previously untapped water upstream of the Tirukoyilur anicut, addressing a long-standing demand of local farmers. District Collector M.S. Prasanth and WRD officials were also present at the ceremony.
