Sabarmati's Lifeline: ₹2,566 Crore Water Security Boost for Gujarat

The Gujarat government has initiated a ₹2,566-crore project to build 12 barrages along the Sabarmati River, strengthening water security in north Gujarat.

Extending 148 km from Dharoi Dam in Mehsana to Vasna Barrage in Ahmedabad, the project aims to provide year-round water for irrigation, drinking, and groundwater recharge. "These barrages will support multiple needs, including irrigation, drinking water supply, groundwater conservation, and ecological restoration," said P.C. Vyas, Secretary of the Water Resources Department.

The initiative will benefit cities like Satlasana, Idar, Vijapur, Mansa, Prantij, Gandhinagar, and Ahmedabad, along with numerous villages. Construction is underway at four sites, while planning continues for the remaining eight. Mehsana will see six barrages costing ₹1,500 crore at Chhelpura, Techava, Fudeda, Falu, and Ged, with one in Rajpur, Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad will feature a rubber barrage at Acher.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for a barrage in Ambod, Gandhinagar, in January. Additionally, a ₹55-crore rubber weir with a cantilever bridge is being constructed in Ahmedabad.

The entire project is set for completion within three years.
