Safe Water for All: Punjab’s ₹2,900 Crore Success Story

The Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation Department has invested more than ₹2,900 crore this year to strengthen water supply and sanitation infrastructure across the state.

Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian said the increased funding has fast-tracked the completion of key projects, boosted the use of modern technology, and strengthened water quality and sanitation systems. These efforts have significantly improved everyday life in rural and semi-urban areas.

At present, over 34 lakh families in Punjab have access to safe drinking water, achieving 100 percent coverage. With this achievement, Punjab has become the fifth state in India to provide functional household tap connections to every rural household. Special focus was given to water quality-affected regions, where 15 major surface water supply projects are benefiting 1,706 villages.

“The sustained financial push has strengthened water quality and sanitation systems, leading to tangible improvements in people’s daily lives,” the minister said. These accomplishments mark a major step forward in ensuring reliable and safe water access for rural communities in Punjab.
