Satluj to Shimla: A ₹600-Crore Lifeline for the Next 50 Years

Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri has announced a ₹600-crore drinking water project to supply water to Shimla from the Satluj River, aimed at ensuring long-term water security for the state capital.

The project is designed to meet Shimla’s growing demand over the coming decades. It currently supplies 42 million litres per day (MLD), with plans to scale capacity up to 67 MLD, ensuring a sustainable water supply for up to 50 years. Completion is targeted for June 2026.

In parallel, the state government is progressing a ₹325-crore water supply scheme for drought-prone areas such as Matiyana and Theog, along with steady advancement of the Kurpan Khad project.

Alongside these water initiatives, infrastructure upgrades—including escalators at Jakhu Temple and improvements in transport connectivity—are being undertaken to support tourism and urban development in the region.
