Shillong’s Water Future Gets a ₹770 Crore Upgrade

The Meghalaya State Cabinet has approved a revised project cost of Rs 770 crore for Phase I of the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme, marking a substantial increase from the earlier estimate of Rs 553 crore.

The escalation in cost is attributed to major design and structural modifications intended to enhance the project’s long-term sustainability and operational efficiency. One of the key changes involves relocating the proposed dam site further upstream after the development of a scientific landfill at Nonghali made the original site unsuitable. The revised proposal also includes provisions for dedicated power transmission lines and additional land acquisition, both considered critical for ensuring a dependable and efficient water supply system.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated that the revisions are aimed at improving the durability and effectiveness of the infrastructure, which is expected to cater to Shillong’s water needs for many years.

Shillong has historically struggled with inadequate and ageing water supply infrastructure, resulting in recurring water shortages across the city. Upon completion, the upgraded scheme is expected to significantly enhance water availability, distribution efficiency, and overall urban infrastructure resilience in the state capital.
