The South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) has proposed an ₹80-crore project to boost India's global apparel export competitiveness through sustainable manufacturing. The Coimbatore-based body has requested funding from both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments to establish a Centre of Excellence in Tiruppur and upgrade R&D facilities at its Coimbatore headquarters. Spanning two to three acres, the proposed Tiruppur centre will integrate with an existing common effluent treatment plant (CETP) to provide shared access to eco-friendly technologies—such as SITRA's proprietary saltless dyeing and upcoming waterless dyeing solutions. Backed by industry bodies like the Apparel Export Promotion Council, the project aims to help local manufacturers meet stringent international green standards while tackling critical environmental challenges, including sludge disposal from zero liquid discharge (ZLD) systems.
