Chennai Metrowater is preparing to implement smart water meters in nearly one lakh buildings across the city, aiming to promote efficient water usage and strengthen demand-side water management.
The Rs 392.59 crore project will be executed under the hybrid annuity model (HAM) and will primarily target high water-consuming users, including commercial establishments, industrial units, multi-storied buildings, and residential properties exceeding 2,500 sq. ft. Announced in the 2024–25 Budget, the project experienced delays due to the preparation of a detailed project report, identification of advanced metering technology, and completion of the tendering process.
To date, approximately 22,000 buildings have been equipped with smart meters. The initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency, reduce non-revenue water, and enable accurate monthly billing through IoT-enabled meters that capture real-time water consumption data.
However, concerns have been raised by resident groups. S Gopi, Secretary of the Subramania Nagar Civic and Welfare Association, emphasized that smart meters should be installed only after adequate improvements are made to the city’s water supply and sewerage infrastructure.
