Soaring High: Kota-Bundi to Get New ₹1,507 Crore Airport

On August 19, 2025, the Union Cabinet approved the development of a greenfield airport at Kota–Bundi in Rajasthan, with a total investment of ₹1,507 crore, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced.

The project will replace the existing limited-capacity airstrip with a full-fledged airport, slated for completion within 24 months. The Rajasthan government will provide 1,089 acres of land at no cost, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will finance construction using internal accruals. The airport will feature a 20,000 sq. metre terminal building and a 3,200 x 45 metre runway, designed to handle up to 2 million passengers annually.

Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the strategic significance of the development: “Kota, a major industrial and educational hub, will gain from enhanced regional connectivity and a strong economic uplift.”

The announcement comes amid India’s broader aviation expansion, with the number of operational airports rising from 74 in 2014 to 162 in 2025. Passenger traffic has also surged from 16.8 crore in 2014 to 41.2 crore in 2025, underscoring the government’s sustained focus on improving air infrastructure nationwide.
