The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved USD 460 million in results-based financing to modernize rural power infrastructure and boost agricultural productivity in Maharashtra.
Under the Maharashtra Power Distribution Enhancement Program, the initiative will provide reliable daytime solar power to farmers in line with the state’s Power Sector Vision 2030. It includes solarizing agricultural feeders, upgrading rural distribution networks, installing battery energy storage systems (BESS), and promoting green jobs, particularly for women.
A USD 40 million concessional loan from the Clean Technology Fund will complement the investment. By 2028, the program aims to benefit 900,000 agricultural consumers, cut greenhouse gas emissions by three million tonnes, and advance Maharashtra’s renewable energy targets. Key components involve upgrading substations and transformers and enhancing grid operations through digitization.
