Sonowal Reviews $10K Cr Namrup Fertiliser Upgrade

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, visited the Namrup Fertiliser Plant in Assam on 23 November 2025 to review its ongoing expansion initiatives.

The facility is set for a major upgrade with an investment of over Rs 10,000 crore to establish a new brownfield Ammonia–Urea complex. The expansion will add a fourth plant at the site, boosting total production capacity to 12.5 lakh tonnes per annum. The project aims to enhance agricultural output, create large-scale employment, and strengthen industrial infrastructure across the region. The new complex is expected to support farmers throughout Northeast India and facilitate exports to neighbouring countries such as Bhutan and Myanmar.

Highlighting the project’s strategic importance, Sonowal said the development will help position the Northeast as a key industrial hub in Southeast Asia, noting that the plant is receiving a “new lease of life” under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
