The Tata Group is set to revolutionize India's semiconductor industry with a new ₹27,000 crore semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam. Scheduled to begin operations next year, this state-of-the-art plant will package around 15 billion chips annually, catering to global customers.
Inaugurated at a groundbreaking ceremony, the facility marks India's first indigenous semiconductor assembly and testing plant. These chips will power electric vehicles, healthcare devices, mobile phones, and laptops, serving leading global companies. Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran highlighted the group's expanding electronics ecosystem across India, from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka, and now to Assam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the Gujarat and Assam facilities, emphasizing Assam’s strategic proximity to semiconductor hubs in Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore. Chandrasekaran expressed pride in Tata Group’s role in advancing India’s semiconductor industry, viewing this investment as a crucial step for the future.
Managed by Tata Electronics, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, the Assam facility will complement existing operations in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Tata Electronics CEO & MD Randhir Thakur emphasized the global impact of the ₹27,000 crore investment, which will significantly enhance India's semiconductor packaging capabilities.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured full support from the state government, expressing gratitude to the Tata Group for this transformative project. The facility is poised to make Assam a major electronics hub, attracting more companies and fostering industry growth in the region.
