Tata Steel Builds Zero: India Gets its First Steel-Based ZEB.

Tata Steel, in collaboration with constructsteel—the steel construction market development programme of the World Steel Association—has inaugurated a pioneering steel-based Zero Energy Building (ZEB) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Spread across 1,836 sq. ft., the building was completed in just 3.5 months using advanced light-gauge steel frame (LGSF) technology. Designed to generate as much energy as it consumes annually, the facility achieves net-zero energy performance. Inaugurated by Tata Steel CEO T. V. Narendran, the building incorporates high-performance glazing, insulated walls, and rooftop solar panels to produce clean energy, marking a significant milestone in India’s transition towards sustainable and energy-efficient infrastructure.

The ZEB also integrates building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), rainwater harvesting systems, and low-flow water fixtures to optimise overall resource efficiency. Highlighting the project’s importance, Narendran said, “The steel-based zero energy building reflects the future of construction.” He added that LGSF technology enables faster, stronger, and more sustainable construction with minimal environmental impact, offering a scalable model for low-carbon, energy-efficient buildings across India.
