Tata Motors has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with VO Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) to deploy 40 Green Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2 ICE)-powered prime movers at the Tuticorin port in Tamil Nadu, marking a major push toward greener port operations.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
Under the agreement, Tata Motors will commence trials with a hydrogen-powered prime mover, followed by the phased rollout of 40 H2 ICE-powered vehicles over the next two years. The initiative will be funded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, underscoring the Government of India’s commitment to accelerating green energy adoption and building a sustainable maritime ecosystem, according to a company release.
VOCPA Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit said the introduction of green hydrogen-powered trucks is expected to significantly decarbonise cargo handling activities and set a benchmark for sustainable port-led logistics in India. To support phased deployment, the port authority is also progressing plans to establish a 2 MW electrolyser and a dedicated hydrogen refuelling station.
This initiative, along with other green fuel projects, is aimed at strengthening the green hydrogen ecosystem and positioning VOC Port as a frontrunner in sustainable maritime infrastructure.
