India’s largest single-shield tunnel boring machine (TBM), measuring 13.34 metres, has been successfully lowered at the Thane portal, marking a major milestone for the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel project.
With an investment of ₹20,000 crore, the project represents Mumbai’s longest and widest urban tunnel initiative and is expected to transform city mobility. The twin tunnel spans 10.8 km, with 5.75 km to be excavated from Borivali and 6.09 km from Thane, at an approximate depth of 60 metres. Once operational, it will slash travel time between the eastern and western suburbs from the current 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes. The project is poised to ease congestion, reduce pollution, and significantly improve connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Executed by MEIL under the leadership of MMRDA, the project marks a crucial step in addressing Mumbai’s mobility challenges, with the TBM progressing at an average rate of 11 metres per day through challenging underground terrain.
