The Telangana government has agreed to take over Phase-I of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project from Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in a deal valued at ₹15,000 crore. As part of the agreement, the state will acquire L&T’s equity for ₹2,000 crore and assume ₹3,000 crore of its debt related to the project.
The decision comes after L&T opted to exit its nearly 90% stake in the 70-km Metro corridor, citing ongoing operational challenges and accumulated losses. The agreement was finalised following a meeting between Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and L&T CMD S. N. Subrahmanyan.
This strategic move is expected to facilitate faster approvals for Phase-II of the Hyderabad Metro from the Central government and ensure the seamless expansion of the city’s urban transit infrastructure.
