Amara Raja Batteries (ARBL) is set to develop a cutting-edge research and manufacturing facility for lithium-ion batteries in Mahbubnagar district, Telangana. With an investment exceeding ₹9,500 crore over the next decade, the company aims to build a lithium cell gigafactory with a capacity of up to 16 GWh, along with a battery pack assembly unit capable of up to 5 GWh.
Chairman and MD, Jayadev Galla, announced the initiative on March 7, 2025, in the presence of Telangana’s Minister for Industries, KT Rama Rao, following the signing of a formal MoU. Minister Rao highlighted Telangana’s leadership in sustainability and called this the largest investment in India’s lithium-ion cell manufacturing sector.
The project will be part of the Amara Raja Giga Corridor, which will house the Amara Raja E-hub in Hyderabad—a state-of-the-art energy research and innovation center. This facility will feature advanced laboratories for material research, prototyping, product lifecycle analysis, and proof-of-concept demonstrations, fostering technological advancements and entrepreneurship in sustainable energy.
Additionally, ARBL plans to establish a commercial-scale pilot plant and the country’s first giga-scale lithium cell production facility. To drive this initiative, the company had earlier set up a subsidiary, Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies, reinforcing its commitment to India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision.
