The Big Connection: Jeypore, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri

Railway connectivity projects linking Jeypore with Nabarangpur and Malkangiri in southern Odisha have gained traction after years of slow progress, with land compensation payments now underway for affected villagers.

Originally proposed in the Union Budget 2016–17, the projects include a 42-km rail line to Nabarangpur and a 130-km line to Malkangiri. These routes are aimed at improving connectivity and integrating remote tribal regions with broader economic networks.

In Jeypore tehsil, compensation disbursement has begun, with ₹37 crore allocated for land acquisition across 15 villages. The acquisition process will also cover areas in Borigumma and Boipariguda tehsils.

The Malkangiri line is expected to require over 1,056 acres across 71 villages in Koraput and Malkangiri districts, while the Nabarangpur line will involve nearly 700 acres across 27 villages in Koraput and Nabarangpur.

Once completed, the projects are expected to enhance regional mobility, boost local trade, and support overall socio-economic development in southern Odisha.
