The Final Stretch: Indian Railways Hits 99.2% Electrification

Indian Railways has achieved 99.2% electrification of its broad gauge network, bringing the national transporter close to complete electrification.

This milestone was highlighted by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The pace of electrification has accelerated significantly since 2014, with 46,900 route kilometres electrified during this period—more than double the 21,801 route kilometres completed over the nearly six decades prior to 2014.

As of now, 14 railway zones, including Northern, Western, Central, and Eastern Railways, have attained 100% electrification. Additionally, 25 states and Union Territories are fully electrified. Major states such as Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka have also recorded substantial progress.

The achievement reflects Indian Railways’ focused push towards energy efficiency, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, and lower operational costs, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible transport.
