The Fourth Line Revolution: Karjat to Panvel

Central Railway has announced the development of a new 29-km fourth rail line between Karjat and Panvel to enhance connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Estimated at Rs 491 crore, the project is expected to significantly reduce congestion and provide direct access between Pune and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The final detailed project report (DPR) was submitted to the Railway Board on April 7, 2023, and construction is progressing swiftly. The initiative falls under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project 3 (MUTP-3) and includes major infrastructure features such as long tunnels and bridges—some of the longest in Mumbai’s rail network.

To complement this corridor, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation is also constructing two additional suburban rail lines, with a target completion date of December 2025. The new line will increase capacity for suburban trains alongside existing freight and long-distance services.

Three dedicated local trains are being planned for this stretch, which will benefit rapidly growing areas including Karjat, Panvel, and the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA). The project aims to support sustainable urban growth and improve regional mobility, particularly for airport-bound travelers from Pune.
