On July 17, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first hydrogen-powered train service, operating between Jind and Sonipat. This 10-coach train, driven by a 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell and a 3,200 horsepower propulsion system, represents a significant milestone in sustainable mobility. Capable of a design speed of 110 kmph (with current operational limits of 75 kmph), the train emits only water vapor, aligning with India's green energy goals. This pilot project provides a vital operational roadmap for expanding hydrogen rail infrastructure to routes where full electrification is challenging, placing India alongside global leaders like Germany, Japan, China, and the US in hydrogen transport innovation.
