The Highway to Aspiration: NHAI’s ₹14,000Cr Masterpiece

The Centre has granted in-principle approval for the Atal Progress-Way, also known as the Chambal Expressway, marking a significant step toward strengthening regional connectivity across North and Central India.

The 420-km access-controlled expressway will connect the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway with the Bundelkhand Expressway, traversing Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Estimated to cost about ₹14,000 crore, the project will be implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and will involve both the expansion of existing highways and the construction of new greenfield stretches.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari confirmed the approval after a high-level review meeting with senior central ministers and state representatives. According to officials, environmental clearances have been secured following significant modifications to the alignment.

The revised route avoids forest areas, wildlife zones and the Chambal ravines. Passing through key districts such as Kota, Etawah, Morena and Bhind, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time from 10–11 hours to nearly 5–6 hours. The project is also expected to enhance freight movement, improve connectivity with major highway networks, and support economic development in aspirational regions.
