The Kavach Era Begins! Western Railway’s Major Safety Upgrade

Western Railway’s Vadodara Division has achieved a major safety milestone with the successful commissioning of the Kavach automatic train protection system on the Bajwa–Ahmedabad section.

This marks the first operational deployment of the Kavach system on Western Railway. The advanced safety technology has been activated on a 96 km stretch covering 17 stations and is designed to prevent accidents caused by signal violations while automatically regulating train speeds. Key features of the system include protection against signal passed at danger (SPAD), prevention of head-on and rear-end collisions, automatic speed control, an SOS emergency facility, and automatic whistling at level crossings.

The Kavach infrastructure on the route comprises 23 communication towers, 20 dedicated Kavach buildings, and 192 km of optical fibre cable, enabling real-time communication and accurate train tracking. The system was inaugurated with the first Kavach-enabled run of the Sankalp Fast Passenger train, marking a significant step forward in rail safety for the region.
