The Microgrid Revolution: Neosun's Plan to Power India's Remote Regions

Ilya Likhov, Founder and CEO of Hong Kong-based Neosun Energy, believes that micro-grids and smart grids could be more successful in India than large, centralized networks for efficient energy utilization.

Speaking at India Energy Week, Likhov highlighted India’s ongoing need for wider electricity access, particularly for agriculture, mining, and remote villages. “Expanding transmission lines across the entire country is complex and costly, and delivering fossil fuels to remote areas is challenging,” he told businessline.

Drawing from Neosun Energy’s experience in Africa and the Middle East, Likhov explained how localized small power stations—ranging from 100 kW to 1 MW—have successfully provided energy to communities at a lower cost. “A micro-grid system offers a hybrid solution that is both cost-effective and sustainable,” he said.

India Expansion Plans

Neosun Energy, a global solar EPC and energy storage solutions provider, is now exploring entry into the Indian market. The company operates in 16 countries and has worked with major clients like Allianz, FIFA, and Adidas.

“We are considering two locations—one near Delhi and another near Bengaluru—for our India operations. We are also in the process of hiring a country manager,” Likhov revealed.

Neosun has outlined a three-phase strategy for its India entry:

  1. Providing cost-effective solar solutions to local enterprises.
  2. Setting up an assembly plant for its Power Hub solutions.
  3. Eventually manufacturing solar panels in India, once the company has established a strong network and sales volume, likely within two to three years

Balancing India’s Energy Mix

India has one of the world’s largest energy systems, ranking among the top three in global energy consumption. Likhov emphasized the need for a balanced energy mix, noting that 55% of India’s energy still comes from coal.

“While coal remains dominant, solar power is cheaper, environmentally friendly, and allows decentralized production. However, since solar energy isn’t available at night, integrating energy storage systems is crucial for a sustainable and stable energy future,” he added.
