The Delhi government has announced plans to install solar panels over the Munak Canal as part of a multi-pronged effort to reduce water loss, generate clean electricity, and enhance safety and cleanliness along the vital waterway.
The initiative is currently in the planning and feasibility assessment stage, following a recent site inspection by Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma and senior officials. According to officials, the proposal includes constructing four-foot-high walls along both sides of the canal, on which solar panels will be mounted, covering the Delhi stretch of the Munak Canal.
“The Munak Canal is a lifeline for Delhi's water supply. But in its current form, it also contributes to water loss, pollution, and safety concerns. By covering it with solar panels, we aim to conserve water, generate renewable power, and make the canal more secure for the people of Delhi,” said Minister Verma.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and technical designs are expected to be completed in the coming months, paving the way for implementation.
