The Rebirth of Dharavi: Inside Asia’s Biggest Urban Makeover

Dharavi, one of Mumbai’s most densely populated urban settlements, is poised for a landmark transformation through a large-scale redevelopment initiative aimed at creating a modern, sustainable, and well-connected urban district.

According to a report by HSBC Holdings, the Dharavi Redevelopment Project ranks among the largest urban renewal programmes in Asia. The project seeks to upgrade housing, civic infrastructure, and public amenities for more than one million residents, significantly improving living standards and urban services in the area.

The redevelopment plan envisions the creation of a contemporary urban ecosystem featuring modern residential complexes, enhanced transport connectivity, smart city infrastructure, and improved public spaces. The project is expected to integrate Dharavi more closely with Mumbai’s broader urban landscape while addressing long-standing challenges related to housing, sanitation, and infrastructure.

Once completed, the redevelopment is expected to reshape one of the city’s most prominent informal settlements into a modern urban hub, supporting economic activity, social development, and sustainable growth in the heart of Mumbai.
