On 5 February 2026, Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar visited the Greater Mawkyrwat Combine Water Supply Scheme (GMCWSS), a major drinking water project in the South West Khasi Hills district.
Implemented under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) at a cost of ₹59 crore, the scheme is nearly 90 percent complete and is expected to supply potable water to eight villages—Mawlangwir, Mawten, Mawkyrwat, Wahsiej, Sohkhyllam, Mawmerang, Nongeitser, and Hiland. During the visit, accompanied by Public Health Engineering (PHE) Executive Engineer K Nongbsaw and other officials, the MLA inspected the water treatment plant at Mawten village and urged the contractors to expedite the remaining work.
MLA Tongkhar also assured that the water source is adequate to provide uninterrupted, year-round supply to all beneficiary villages. Executive Engineer Nongbsaw stated that the department is aiming to complete the project by 2026, with additional JJM funding expected to be released shortly.
