The ₹60 Billion Spark: Wangchhu Hydro Project Takes Off

The Adani Group has officially commenced work on the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan, marking a major milestone in its partnership with Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC).

The project’s foundation stone was laid in the presence of Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani. Under the joint venture arrangement, DGPC will hold a 51 per cent equity stake, while the Adani Group will own the remaining 49 per cent.

The Wangchhu project is the first among several planned hydropower developments between the two partners, following memoranda of understanding signed in May 2025 to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan. Estimated to cost around ₹60 billion, the project is targeted for completion within five years.

The initiative underscores Adani Group’s focus on expanding its renewable energy portfolio and strengthening cross-border energy cooperation in the region.
